Getting to Berlin
Berlin is 2–3 flight hours from half of Europe via BER airport. The Airport Express (FEX, RE7/RB14) takes 30 minutes to Hauptbahnhof — cheaper and faster than a taxi. By ICE, Berlin Hbf is 4 hours from Munich, 4 hours from Cologne and 90 minutes from Hamburg.
🚇
Public transport
Berlin has one of Europe's densest transit networks: U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, bus, ferries — all on one fare. A day ticket (AB zone) costs around €10 and is valid for 24 hours. The BVG app shows all connections in real-time. Tip: the Berlin WelcomeCard combines transit with discounts on many sights.

Hotel booking tips
Best rates are usually 6–8 weeks before arrival — for trade fairs (ITB, Berlinale, IFA) and concerts (Mercedes-Benz Arena) book much earlier. Sunday–Tuesday is typically 30–40 % cheaper than Thursday–Saturday in Berlin. Often skip the hotel breakfast — Berlin cafés are better and cheaper.
🌷
Best time to visit
May through September is high season with the most open-air events. July/August can get hot — many Berliners are away then, making the city more relaxed. October offers warm light, busy cafés and fair prices. November–February is affordable but cold — perfect for museums, theatre and hotel spas.
👨👩👧
Travelling with family
Berlin is very child-friendly: many hotels offer family rooms, Tiergarten and Tierpark are world-class zoos, playgrounds in every neighbourhood. Most attractions are free under 6. For longer stays: apartment hotels with kitchens save restaurant costs — see our apartment hotel category.
💼
Business & trade fairs
Messe Berlin (ExpoCenter City) sits in Charlottenburg — hotels there are conference-ready but often double-priced during ITB, IFA or Fruit Logistica. Tip: book hotels in Spandau, Tempelhof or Mitte (with U-Bahn connection to the fair) — up to 60 % cheaper.
🥨
Food & drink
Berlin is one of Europe's most exciting food cities — currywurst, döner, schnitzel, but also 20+ Michelin stars. Kreuzberg/Neukölln for street food and bars, Mitte for star kitchens, Prenzlauer Berg for cosy restaurants. Tipping: 5–10 % is standard, rounded to the next Euro.
🌃
Nightlife
Berlin is legendary for nightlife — Berghain, Sisyphos, KitKat, RSO. Clubs typically open after 11pm and run until Sunday lunch. Door selectors decide — dress appropriately, stay calm, avoid large groups. For boutique experiences: roof bars like Klunkerkranich (Neukölln), Monkey Bar (City West) or Buck and Breck.
